Where civil engineering meets LUG intelligent lighting

In the heart of the picturesque yet technologically advanced province of Zuid-Holland, the N468 route is currently undergoing a process that extends far beyond a simple surface renovation. The section of road connecting Maasland with a key roundabout at the A4 motorway is an artery of changing character, where heavy transit traffic meets the needs of the local community.

The modernization of this section has become a major engineering undertaking, encompassing not only new road geometry but also complex embankment stabilization, bridge reconstruction, and the modernization of a dense underground infrastructure network. In this multi-dimensional project, lighting is no longer treated as a final aesthetic detail, but has become the foundation for the safety and clarity of the new space. The key factor unifying all aspects of this investment—from technical civil engineering requirements to the social expectations of residents—was the implementation of an advanced lighting system based on LUG luminaires.

CHALLENGES

esigning the lighting for the N468 was like solving a complex puzzle. We had to face three key challenges:

1. Interdisciplinary coordination
The lighting installation had to be precisely integrated with bridge reconstruction and embankment stabilization
.

2. Changing traffic dynamics
Transforming the road into a more local space required lighting that doesn't just "shine," but builds a sense of clarity and predictability for the route
.

3. Environmental responsibility
The demanding Dutch market imposed rigorous standards regarding the reduction of light pollution and maximum energy efficiency.

SOLUTIONS

With efficacy reaching 181 lm/W, URBINO LED luminaires drastically reduced power demand, making the modernization an investment with a rapid return (ROI).

Luminaire placement was strictly correlated with the new route geometry, eliminating dark zones and improving depth perception for drivers.

The use of a wide range of light distributions allowed for differentiated treatment of the main carriageway, bicycle paths, and access zones—while maintaining full visual consistency across the entire route.

LUG Technology

URBINO LED

  • A universal lighting solution for heterogeneous spaces.
  • High luminous efficacy of up to 181 lm/W.
  • Wide range of certifications, including ENEC+ and Zhaga D4i.
  • DarkSky certified: coupled with precision optics, the luminaire minimizes light pollution.
  • Smart-Ready System: Fully prepared for intelligent infrastructure management through control module compatibility.
  • Tool-free access to the power supply compartment for easy maintenance.
  • Poured gasket and internally painted housing as standard for maximum protection.
  • Operating temperature range up to 55°C ensures reliability in varying conditions.
  • Mounting flexibility: Universal 30° bracket (or optional 165° adjustable bracket) allows for a perfect fit to the route geometry

RESULTS

From the Operator's perspective, the key effect was the reduction of operating costs and electricity consumption.

The high efficiency of the luminaires turned the modernization into a financially viable venture.

Preparing the installation for intelligent systems eliminates the need for costly future reconstructions.

USER SAFETY AND COMFORT

Drivers and cyclists gained higher contrast and better visibility of obstacles after dark.

The high color rendering index (CRI) ensures that road signs remain clear even in difficult weather conditions.

Advanced optics protect road users from glare, improving depth perception.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Precise beam directing limited unwanted light interference with nature.

The use of various light distributions allowed for the safe lighting of the roadway and bicycle paths while maintaining landscape harmony.
