Technology perfectly tailored to the conditions?
CRUISER 2 LED SP as the answer to a demanding environment..
IN PROJECT:
A swimming pool is not only a challenging environment for users and HVAC systems. It also presents a particular challenge for technical equipment operating for years in an atmosphere characterised by elevated humidity and temperature, as well as the presence of water disinfection by-products.
European studies on indoor swimming pool environments indicate that the atmosphere in such facilities can be chemically aggressive. The combination of high humidity and volatile chlorine compounds, including trichloramine, can accelerate material degradation and corrosion processes. Research conducted in European facilities confirms the importance of these factors for the durability of structural components and equipment.
In a swimming pool hall, direct contact with water is not the only concern. Humid air, which can condense on cooler surfaces, is also a significant factor.
In practice, this means that metal components, mounting brackets, housings and connections can be exposed to a thin layer of moisture for prolonged periods. When chlorine compounds generated during water treatment are also present in the atmosphere, conditions become particularly unfavourable for corrosion processes.
This issue is well documented in European projects. When describing the lighting installation at a major aquatic centre in the UK, CIBSE highlights high humidity and condensation as factors contributing to the corrosion of metal lighting components. The project incorporated, among other measures, die-cast aluminium luminaires, additional protective coatings and high-grade stainless-steel components.
This demonstrates an important design principle: in a swimming pool environment, the resistance of a luminaire should be considered as a characteristic of the entire solution, rather than simply as an individual technical parameter.
Elevated humidity, the possibility of condensation and the presence of chlorine compounds in the atmosphere increase the risk of corrosion and material degradation.
At the facility in question, this translated into frequent failures of the existing system and high maintenance costs. An additional challenge was the operation of luminaires in a difficult-to-access environment, where every service intervention involved additional organisation and costs.
The key challenge was therefore to find a solution that would combine energy efficiency with durability and resistance to the specific operating conditions.
We began with a lighting analysis and an assessment of the installation's operating conditions. Based on this, 22 LUG CRUISER 2 LED SP luminaires were installed together with dedicated mounting brackets.
This approach allowed the technology to be tailored not only to the lighting requirements, but also to the actual operating conditions.
The use of high-efficiency LED technology combines energy efficiency with reduced maintenance requirements, while the dedicated construction solution enhances the system's resistance to the environmental factors present in the facility.
The result is an approach in which the choice of technology is directly driven by the environmental conditions and the anticipated lifecycle of the installation.
The new installation combines the high efficiency of LED technology with increased resistance and reliability, reducing the need for service interventions and lowering system maintenance costs.
From the investor's perspective, the key benefit is not only improved energy efficiency, but above all a longer perspective of trouble-free operation and a reduction in the total cost of maintaining the lighting system.
The project demonstrates that in a demanding environment, the right choice of technology should take into account not only lighting performance, but also resistance, durability and operating conditions throughout the installation's entire lifecycle.
